The World : Shultz to Visit Caribbean
Secretary of State George P. Shultz will visit Haiti and the Dominican Republic later this month. His itinerary will include the Aug. 16 inauguration of Joaquin Balaguer as Dominican Republic president, the State Department announced. It said that Shultz will meet earlier that week with government officials in Haiti, where an 11-member defense requirement study team from the Pentagon is conducting an evaluation of the country’s armed forces. The visit to Haiti will be the first by a high-level U.S. official since the ouster of President-for-Life Jean-Claude Duvalier on Feb. 7.
