About 2,500 firefighters battled a “severe fire situation” in which hundreds of lightning-sparked blazes have charred about 160,000 acres of dry forest and rangeland in three Pacific Northwest states. One of the hardest hit areas was the Wallowa-Whitman and Malheur National Forests in northeastern Oregon, where crews battled 117 lightning-caused blazes. More than 200 firefighters contained two fires that burned about 33,000 acres of brush and rangeland in Idaho, and a 240-acre blaze was brought under control in the Okanogan National Forest in Washington.
