British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher will have surgery on her right hand today and is expected to spend three to five days in the hospital. The 60-year-old leader entered King Edward VII’s Hospital for Officers in London’s West End after a mini-summit of Commonwealth leaders. Her condition is known as Dupuytren’s contracture, which involves a contraction of the little finger that pulls it toward the palm. Members of her staff said she has had the condition for 10 years. Doctors said that without surgery, the problem could cause deformity and the loss of function.
