A House delegation marched into the Senate chamber today and formally presented articles of impeachment against jailed U.S. District Judge Harry E. Claiborne, clearing the way for the first Senate impeachment trial in more than half a century.

Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.) says the trial won’t begin until after the Senate returns Sept. 9 from its three-week summer recess. Claiborne, serving a two-year sentence for tax evasion, has refused to resign and is continuing to collect his $78,700 annual salary as chief U.S. district judge for Nevada.
