Silent Moment in Hiroshima

Hiroshima fell silent for one minute today to mark the day 41 years ago that the United States dropped a four-ton atomic bomb on the Japanese city in the world’s first atomic bombing.

At the end of the day of mourning, thousands of brightly lighted paper lanterns symbolizing the victims of the catastrophic Aug. 6, 1945, attack were sent bobbing down three of Hiroshima’s six rivers. About 130,000 people died within three months of the attack and 140,000 others died in subsequent years.
