As the school was revealing additional National Collegiate Athletic Assn. basketball violations, which were recently discovered, Bradley Coach Dick Versace left to become an assistant coach with the National Basketball Assn.’s Detroit Pistons.

Versace, charged by the NCAA Committee on Infractions with unethical conduct, had signed a one-year contract July 14 for a ninth season with Bradley, with the understanding that he would not be offered another. Bradley Vice President Gary Anna said that Versace would have no difficulty getting out of that contract.

The school, however, probably won’t face new penalties, according to Athletic Director Ron Ferguson.

Bradley already faces NCAA bans on postseason play and off-campus recruiting for next season and a two-year suspension. Ferguson said that the school didn’t appeal the sanctions, levied July 14, for fear the school would be dealt even stiffer penalties.

Additional irregularities were uncovered by an internal Bradley investigation into NCAA charges that the school violated rules in 1981 in its recruiting of a high school basketball prospect, Anthony Webster.

Ferguson said he didn’t know what the newly uncovered violations involved.
