Memo to Pierce Brosnan: Timothy Dalton is James Bond and you’re not.

Producer Albert R. (Cubby) Broccoli announced Wednesday that 38-year-old British stage actor Timothy Dalton has been selected to play Bond in “The Living Daylights,” the 16th Bond film, due to start filming for United Artists in September.

Speculation had been that “Remington Steele’s” Brosnan would take over for Roger Moore as the new Bond. But when the canceled NBC series was subsequently picked by the network for six episodes as a midseason replacement, the 35-year-old Brosnan was virtually taken out of the running.

A native of Wales, Dalton trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and was a member of the National Youth Theatre. He has appeared in “Romeo and Juliet” and “Love’s Labour’s Lost” with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

“The Living Daylights” will mark Dalton’s 12th feature film. He has appeared as King Phillip in “The Lion in Winter” and as Heathcliff in “Wuthering Heights.” His last film appearance was in “Chanel Solitaire,” a biography of designer Coco Chanel.

Dalton has also appeared in a number of television parts. He had a leading role in the miniseries “Mistral’s Daughter” and “Sins.”

For those who collect vital statistics: Dalton is 6-foot-2 and has blue-green eyes.
