Rancho P. V. : City Manager in Final Week

Nearly three months after he announced his intention to resign as city manager, Donald F. Guluzzy will leave his post Friday to become the $55,000-a-year general manager of the San Mateo County Harbor District in the San Francisco Bay Area. He will begin the job Sept. 8.

“It’s a challenging position and I’m happy about it,” said Guluzzy, adding that he will supervise master planning of one marina and development of restaurants and commercial buildings at a second marina. He also will handle personnel and budget matters.

Recruitment of a new city manager began shortly after Guluzzy announced his resignation in early May after 5 1/2 years with the city. Mayor Douglas Hinchliffe said last week that the field of candidates has narrowed to four and that the City Council expects to name a manager by Aug. 15. The salary will be between $50,000 and $60,000 a year, he said.

Guluzzy’s resignation from his $48,000 post was interpreted as a mutual decision by Guluzzy and the council that it was time for a change. Hinchliffe, acknowledging that there had been disagreement on some issues, said in May that Guluzzy made an independent decision to leave but the council did not “beat him over the head to stay.” Guluzzy said he was tired and needed new challenges.

Guluzzy’s resignation initially was effective July 1, but he agreed to stay on until the city had a new manager or he had a new job.
