Bruce B. Butler, who guided the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District through rapid growth and subsequent decline in enrollment, was awarded a certificate of appreciation for his 40 years of service to the district. Butler, who served as the associate superintendent of business, retired in early July.

Sgt. Jack S. Kuner, who works in the Norwalk sheriff’s substation, was awarded a 1986 LEO Award after being selected as one of the Ten Outstanding Law Enforcement Officers. The award, sponsored by the Los Angeles Damayan Lions Club, honors the top 10 officers in the Los Angeles area for their community contributions. Kuner, who has worked for the department for 30 years, has been stationed in Norwalk for 24 years.

Nancy Jenkins, a board member of the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, has been elected president of the Los Angeles County School Trustee Assn., which represents 82 school districts. The organization provides school board members with information about legislative issues affecting education.

Dr. John Alexander of Downey, a cardiologist in private practice and director of the cardiology and coronary care unit at Downey Community Hospital, has been named vice president of the American Heart Assn.

Beverly Mathis has been installed as president of Soroptimist International of Downey. Carol Torsney has been seated as president-elect and Marvel Dodson as vice president.

Jennifer Ybarra, Sherline Hine, Maria Baez, Anthu Hoang and Bonavy Hun, all students at Clearwater Intermediate School in the Paramount Unified School District, have received special certificates for having had perfect attendance for three years.

Evelyn D. Leong of Whittier has been installed as president of the Rio Hondo Symphony Assn., succeeding Archie E. Beasor of Santa Fe Springs.

John Hergersheimer, a teacher and social studies chairman at Norwalk High School, was named president of the California Council for Social Studies, a state organization for elementary, secondary and college teachers. Hergersheimer is also a mentor teacher at Norwalk High, where he has taught for 29 years.

Santa Fe High School senior Tho Huu Lam received the first Armando J. Mora Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 sponsored by Santa Fe High School and the City of Santa Fe Springs. The scholarship, set up in memory of a councilman who died in 1985, will be given each year to a student who is an academic achiever and who has volunteered services to the school and community.
