Researchers at the Claremont Graduate School have found that Beverly Hills leads a number of other Southern California cities in the number of retail and service businesses per 10,000 residents.
The study by psychology professor Allan W. Wicker and doctoral student Jeanne C. King found that Beverly Hills has 400 retail and service businesses per 10,000 residents, with a population of 33,350, compared to 131 per 10,000 in the city of Los Angeles, which has 3.1 million residents
The study covered five counties and 19 cities, and Beverly Hills had the most businesses per capita, King said.
“Beverly Hills has an exceptionally large number of personal services, clothing stores, gift and jewelry stores, full-time specialty shops and home furnishings,” the report said. “This retail/service pattern fits Beverly Hills’ image as a fashion and design center for the affluent.”
