The World : Ulster Politician Arrested

Share

A Northern Ireland politician was arrested in the Irish Republic after a group of pro-British Protestants raided a village across the border. Peter Robinson, a member of Parliament and deputy leader of the Rev. Ian Paisley’s Democratic Unionist Party, was allegedly among a mob of 300 Protestants, many wearing masks and carrying clubs, who hoisted the Ulster flag over the village of Clontibret, smashed windows in the police station and beat two policemen before being driven off. The raid reportedly was intended to show that border security, which is supposed to stop the movement of Irish nationalist guerrillas, is inadequate.
