INDIANAPOLIS — Jack Ramsay, former head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, was named today as head coach of the NBA’s Indiana Pacers, General Manager Donnie Walsh announced.
Ramsay, 61, is second only to Red Auerbach in NBA victories, with a 785-691 win-loss record in 18 seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Buffalo Braves and Portland. He was dismissed by the Trail Blazers at the end of last season when the club fell below the .500 mark, 40-42, despite taking them to the playoffs nine times and to the NBA championship in his first season, 1976-77.
