Bunzel’s letter was unnecessarily harsh, to say the least.

Since liberty means freedom in every aspect of the word, our Miss Liberty would have smiled at a joke, which is one of hundreds on the subject. That is what is so great about our United States--we have the freedom to joke about everything.

Bob Hope did not speak indecent language and he is not a vulgar gentleman or artist. No entertainer in our history has brought more laughter and humaneness to the entire civilized world and our servicemen and women both through wars and peace time. It is men like Bob Hope who make our country great. He is above criticism whatsoever.

Where is your sense of humor, Mr. Bunzel? Miss Liberty would have toppled off her pedestal with laughter at Hope’s joke. The Statue of Liberty will remain with the American people for all time as well as Bob Hope who is a national treasure.
