Golf Course Bar to Women Challenged

MANCHESTER, Conn. — The Manchester Country Club’s policy of keeping women off the golf course on weekend mornings violates the club’s lease with the town, an attorney hired by a town official said.
Attorney Kevin M. O’Brien said the country club’s lease states that “all members and occasional players shall have equal rights to the course.” That phrase and other language in the lease prohibits the course from restricting players’ hours, he said.
Women must wait until 11:30 a.m. to tee off at Manchester Country Club on Saturdays and Sundays. The rule was revoked in June after several female members of the club complained but was reinstated seven weeks later.
