Peruvian air force Alfa-37 jets bombed, strafed and fired rockets at two cocaine dealers’ bases in the Amazon jungle as part of a sweeping assault on a dozen such bases in Peru, an Interior Ministry communique said. It was the first time anywhere that jet warplanes were used in an anti-narcotics operation, Interior Minister Abel Salinas told the official news agency Andina. Civil guard helicopters were also used in the attacks on the facilities, some of which were outfitted with concrete airstrips.
