Gil Kraemer, representing the Laguna Niguel (Calif.) team, caught a tournament- and possible world-record 1,062 1/2-pound Pacific blue marlin on 50-pound test line on the final day of the 28th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament off the coast of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Kraemer’s catch broke the tournament record of 916 pounds set in 1973. The catch must be verified by the International Game Fishing Assn. to be a world record.

Kraemer fought the fish for 1 1/2 hours. It was so large that, after it was landed, it was strapped to the side of the boat and towed back to Kailua pier rather than being brought aboard the craft.

The Laguna Niguel team won the tournament with 2,468 points.
