This mornings’s newspaper (July 28) had an article, “Fisherman Swept to his Death, Two Others Lost at Point Mugu.”

Well, one of the two missing was the father of a Korean woman who lives in the apartment next to me. His name was Uk Sop Yi. He was 52 years old and a recent immigrant from Korea. I personally did not know him very well, but I feel that he should be recognized for his bravery because not only did he try to rescue someone who had accidentally fallen into the dangerous surf, but also because he tried to rescue someone that he didn’t even know.

Given the dangerous conditions (10-foot ocean waves), I’m not sure I, or many other people for that matter, would have tried to rescue someone they didn’t know. Indeed, there were some people at the scene who didn’t or perhaps couldn’t help. Lastly, the other man who also tried to help, but was also swept to sea, should also be commended. I understand that he also did not know the first person who fell in the water or Mr. Yi for that matter.
