Aussie Calls Grain Sale ‘Outrage’

SAN FRANCISCO —
Australia’s foreign affairs minister said today the U.S. decision to sell subsidized grain to the Soviet Union and China has caused “genuine outrage” among Australians and will do “great damage” to the stability of the South Pacific.
Bill Hayden made the statement just before ANZUS alliance talks between the United States and Australia, with New Zealand absent. China and the Soviet Union both buy wheat from Australia. “Is this the way the Congress of the United States treats old and firm allies?” Hayden asked.
