A former mail handler at the main San Diego Post Office was sentenced to four years in federal prison Monday for conspiring to steal food stamps from the mails.

Abraham Whitfield had worked for the Postal Service in San Diego for seven years before being charged in the food stamp scheme and another plot to embezzle $200,000 in government checks from the mails.

An indictment accused Whitfield and two former girlfriends of conspiring to possess and distribute food stamps. One of the women, Vera Mae Lamb, pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge and was sentenced to perform 75 hours of community service. The other, Conchita Tongpoen, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of food stamps and was placed on probation.
