The Nation : Illinois Challenge Filed
The Illinois Democratic Party joined third-party gubernatorial candidate Adlai E. Stevenson III in challenging the nominating petitions of the Rev. Charles Koen of Cairo, a civil rights leader, who is running for governor on the Illinois Independent Party ticket. Stevenson won the Democratic nomination in March, but launched a third-party bid after refusing to run on the same ticket as two supporters of political extremist Lyndon H. LaRouche Jr. Democrats hope to make the election a one-on-one race between Stevenson and Gov. James R. Thompson.
