The World : Iraqis Raid Far-Off Target

Share

Iraqi warplanes for the first time attacked Iran’s remote Sirri Island oil terminal, setting three tankers ablaze, hours after an Iranian missile struck an oil refinery in Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, according to reports from the two combatants. Shipping sources in Bahrain said 12 seamen of various nationalities were missing and believed dead in the Iraqi air raid. Sirri is 600 miles south of the nearest Iraqi military air base. The raid indicated that Iraq has acquired the capability for in-flight refueling to extend the range of its warplanes and expose all of Iran’s 500-mile coast to air strikes.
