West Germany said it expects to pay its farmers about $240 million, twice the amount originally envisaged, in compensation for loss of income resulting from the April 26 Chernobyl nuclear plant accident in the Soviet Union. Agriculture Ministry officials said the government has received 314,000 applications for compensation. They said the number was so large because farmers have followed government guidelines to the letter, by destroying produce and not putting cattle out to pasture to prevent radiation contamination. Bonn has received no response from Moscow on its demand for compensation.
