FOCUS: Fount of Industry Missions, mineral springs and oil derricks were only the beginning. No other era in the city’s history shaped it like the influx of businesses and large industries that settled here during the 1950s. Industries moved in on the heels of an oil boom, which drew hundreds in the 1920s looking for a quick way to get rich. When oil production declined, the city was left to ex-GIs and business owners, who together called for cityhood and more local control over zoning and development. The result is a city that is 85% zoned for industry and home to over 3,000 companies. Even one of the few historic sites that remain--Heritage Park, which will house a turn-of-the-century water tower and an adobe foundation from an early settler’s home--will be surrounded by a commercial and light industrial corporate center, the largest development to date. Two oil derricks will continue to produce oil on the site. City Services City Hall 868-0511 11710 E.
