Oregon Democrats Seek Candidate
Oregon Democrats, reeling from Rep. James Weaver’s decision to drop out of the U.S. Senate race, began the process Wednesday of finding a replacement to mount a general election challenge to Republican incumbent Bob Packwood.
Weaver, 59, a six-term incumbent from the 4th Congressional District, officially notified Secretary of State Barbara Roberts that he is abandoning the race to concentrate on a House Ethics Committee investigation of his use of $80,000 in campaign funds in the investment market.
Even before Weaver officially withdrew, three candidates had announced their intention to seek the nomination.
Judy Carnahan, chairwoman of the Democratic Party of Oregon, said the central committee will meet Aug. 23 to select a Senate candidate to replace Weaver.
