Del Mar : Bold Jade Wins Second Straight for Dollase

Share

For trainer Wallace Dollase, there was much to happy about Wednesday.

After all, his horse, Bold Jade, pulled away to win the $50,000-added De Anza Stakes for 2-year-olds in front of 21,086 at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.

But now, Dollase has much to worry about.

As he paraded around the winner’s circle, congratulating owners and winning jockey Eddie Delahoussaye, Dollase proclaimed: “That’s two in a row.”

And therein lies Dollase’s concern.

A year ago, Dollase also saddled the winner of the De Anza Stakes, Bolger Magic. The horse went from there to the Del Mar Futurity where at 6-1 odds he finished a distant sixth, 19 lengths behind Tasso.

This year, Bolger Magic has run five times and finished no better than fourth, including a fourth-place finish in Wednesday’s fourth race.

Clearly, from this point on, Dollase does not want history to repeat itself.

“He (Bolger Magic) really has had his problems,” Dollase said. “I’m certainly hoping that things go better for Bold Jade.”

Unlike Bolger Magic, Bold Jade had some problems before the running of the De Anza Stakes.

Two weeks ago, he was scheduled to run in the Graduation Stakes here. But the night before the race, some grooms held a party next to Bold Jade’s stable and kept him awake most of the night. He didn’t eat the next morning and Dollase, sensing something was wrong, scratched Bold Jade.

Then, a couple of days ago, it was learned that Alex Solis, who rode Bold Jade to his maiden victory July 12, would not be able ride Wednesday because of a rib injury.

Delahoussaye was notified of his mount aboard Bold Jade only two days ago.

However, Bold Jade’s troubles ended once the gates opened for the six-furlong race Wednesday.

Delahoussaye, with instructions from Dollase, kept his horse close to the pace set by Biloxi Blues and Bidders. With a furlong to go, Delahoussaye and his colt pulled away from favored Chisos by a half-length.

Bold Jade returned $14.80 , $3.40 and $2.10 . Chisos, part of an entry with Biloxi Blues, returned $2.10 and $2.10. Fleeting Jet ran third and paid $2.10.
