The nationwide peace march arrived in Chicago, where the demonstrators were welcomed by Mayor Harold Washington to “the largest nuclear-free zone city in the world.” About 250 marchers, who are urging worldwide nuclear disarmament with their cross-country walk, were joined by several hundred others and walked through the downtown Loop, carrying signs that read “Bread Not Bombs” and “Star Wars--$1 trillion? No Way!” The 600 marchers--only about 250 walk at any one time--began their trek in Los Angeles on March 1, and plan to finish in Washington.
