Share

A former member of Chile’s ruling junta and 39 other people, most of them military figures, were indicted on charges that they belonged to a death squad responsible for dozens of disappearances a decade ago. The victims are presumed dead. Judge Carlos Cerda Fernandez, investigating the case of 13 Communist Party leaders who vanished in Santiago in 1976, indicted and ordered the arrests of the 40, including retired air force Gen. Gustavo Leigh, a member of the four-man junta that seized power in 1973. The others named were 17 air force members, 14 policemen and eight civilians.
