Church-Run Radio Gets Award for Role in Marcos’ Ouster
Radio Veritas, the Roman Catholic Church-run radio station, won the 1986 Ramon Magsaysay award Thursday for journalism, literature and creative communication arts for “using truth to depose an oppressive and corrupt regime.”
Radio Veritas (Truth) played a crucial role in “mobilizing people’s power for a remarkably peaceful transition in authority,” the board of trustees of the award foundation said. The radio carried live coverage of the four-day civilian-backed military revolt in February that toppled Ferdinand E. Marcos and installed Corazon Aquino as president.
The Ramon Magsaysay award is named after a popular Philippine president who died in a plane crash in 1957. It carries a $20,000 cash prize and a gold medallion.
