Jury Absolves Fallen Bridge’s Designers
A jury Thursday found no negligence by the designers of a bridge on Interstate 95 that collapsed in 1983, dropping vehicles 70 feet into a river and killing three people and injuring three seriously.
The Superior Court verdict came in a civil lawsuit filed by the state, which was seeking $25 million in damages from the designers of the Mianus River bridge.
The six-member jury deliberated just under four hours Wednesday and Thursday before announcing its verdict that cleared Tibbetts-Abbett-McCarthy-Stratton of New York City. The state had contended that the angle at which the span was constructed caused its failure.
A 100-foot section of the bridge collapsed early on June 28, 1983, dropping two tractor-trailers and one car into the river.
