Orange County Roundup : Rowing Regatta Set for Saturday

The third “Round the Island” Newport Harbor Rowing Regatta will be Saturday beginning with a 7 a.m. check-in at the Balboa Yacht Club.

The boats will follow a course around Balboa Island from the club to the north side of the island, crossing under the Balboa Island Bridge. They will circle the island and finish in front of the club.

Last year, 47 boats were entered and60 are expected to be entered this year.

The second “Endow the Tailback” 5K and 10K Run, a tribute to Ricky Bell, will be Sunday, Aug. 24, at the Fluor Corp. in Irvine.

All proceeds from the event will become part of the “Endow the Tailback” Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of the late USC tailback.

The race begins at 8 a.m. and late registration will start at 6:30. Pre-registration fees are $10 for the 10K and $8 for the 5K.

All registered runners will receive a commemorative T-shirt and a ticket to a USC football game. For additional information, call event chairman Mark Ashton at 472-9528, or USC assistant athletic director Ron Orr at (213) 743-2771.

A sports vision screening session will be held Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. at the office of optometrists Jeffrey Dougel and Michael Swearingen at 1201 Rose Drive, Placentia.

The free session is designed to evaluate eyesight and identify visual problems that affect sports performance. If necessary, treatment will be recommended.

The annual Chick’s/Saddleback College Labor Day Tennis Tournament will take place Aug. 30-Sept. 1.

Men and women can compete in singles, double and mixed doubles in three categories--Open/A, B and C/D. e

Deadline for registration is Aug. 22. Entry forms can be obtained at the Saddleback College athletic office or at Chick’s Sports Goods, 24821 Alicia Parkway, Laguna Hills.

Cost of the tournament is $12 for singles and $16 for doubles teams. For more information, call the Saddleback College athletic office at 582-4547.

Region 57 of the American Youth Soccer Organization, which includes Corona del Mar and portions of Newport Beach, will begin its season Sept. 13.

The region is in need of one additional coach for its boys’ 8-to 9-year-old division, and referee volunteers are needed for all divisions. Those interested should contact region headquarters at 640-2539.

Coaching and referee clinics are scheduled for Buffalo Hills Park Field for this Saturday, and on Aug. 23 and Sept. 4, 10 and 11.

The Irvine Swim League will hold its championship meet Aug. 23, at Heritage Park Pool in Irvine.

More than 500 swimmers from 5 to 17 are expected to compete in 60 events. The meet will begin at 9 a.m. and is open to the public.

The Chapman College softball team has announced the signing of nine players to letters of intent.

The players are pitchers Tammie Kane of Estancia High School and Shelly Mahon of Western, catchers Gail Russell of Golden West College and April Spurlock of Garden Grove, third basemen Debbie Prosser of Edison and Regina Marchionni of Golden West, shortstop Karen Zupan of Cypress College, first baseman Celeste Collins of Canyon and outfielder Raquel McClellan of Big Bear High.

Gary Bohay of Fountain Valley will compete at the 1986 U.S. World Team Trials in Bloomington, Ind., beginning Aug. 21.

The four-day event will be at Bloomington South High School. The winners will advance to the 1986 World Games in Budapest, Hungary.
