‘Judgment Day for Helms’
George McGovern has called Helms “a disgrace to the Senate” and your editorial has raised serious questions about his ethics, integrity and wisdom, particularly in regard to his unilateral dealings with right-wing dictators.
I hope it’s only a matter of time before you publish an opinion that seems inevitable: a call for censure by Helms’ own Senate colleagues.
Maybe censure is the only way to elevate the craven responses of North Carolina voters who have so far seemed unable to resist the heavy Helms hand at election time. Once they see that the Senate will no longer tolerate his mischievous meddling, they might send a responsible person to represent their state.
