Let Them Snicker

Bill Hughes’ advice to senior motorists (The Mature Traveler, Aug. 3) was excellent. His greatest message, unwritten, was: “Enjoy!”
Our 500-miles-a-day friends snicker when we say it takes us two days to get to San Francisco. Sometimes it takes longer. There are missions we haven’t seen. A country road invites us off the beaten path and we find a whole countryside of almond trees in bloom. Or hillsides green with grass.
Stops in San Luis Obispo or Fresno (there’s a gorgeous Best Western motel there) refresh us for the next leg of the trip. We arrive renewed physically, spiritually.
Maybe Hughes would do a follow-up about the passenger part of senior motoring. A simple trip can become an adventure if you’ll let it.
