Baseball Roundup : Seaver, Red Sox Beat Twins, 3-1

Tom Seaver pitched 8 innings of three-hit ball, and Rich Gedman snapped a ninth-inning tie with a two-run homer as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Minnesota Twins, 3-1, Monday night at Minneapolis.

Gedman’s 12th homer of the season, off the upper-deck facade in right field, decided a pitching duel between Seaver and Frank Viola (13-9). Viola gave up a one-out single to Tony Armas before Gedman connected on a 3-and-1 pitch.

Seaver (7-10) struck out seven and walked four in his 311th career victory. Seaver left the game after a two-out double in the ninth by Randy Bush, and Bob Stanley struck out pinch-hitter Tom Brunansky to get his 15th save.

Earlier, the trade the Red Sox made Sunday with the Seattle Mariners, in which they acquired shortstop Spike Owen and outfielder Dave Henderson for pitchers Mike Brown and Mike Trujillo and an unnamed minor league player, was held up. Brown and Trujillo must clear waivers before the deal is complete.

Owen had been scheduled to start against the Twins.

Cleveland 10, Milwaukee 4--Tony Bernazard homered and drove in three runs, and Mel Hall hit a two-run triple in a four-run third inning at Cleveland as the Indians won their fourth straight game.

Tom Candiotti (12-9) tied for the American League lead with his 11th complete game and scattered 10 hits. He won for the ninth time in his last 12 decisions.

Bernazard led off the bottom of the first inning with his 12th home run and singled home the first two runs in the third.

The Indians (62-57) have not been five games over .500 this late in the season since 1968.

Cleveland’s first six runs were off Chris Bosio, who was making his second major league start. Bosio (0-2) struck out nine batters in 4 innings, fanning the side in order in the second and fourth innings.

Milwaukee’s three pitchers had 13 strikeouts. The Indians’ Cory Snyder fanned four times.

Houston 3, Pittsburgh 0--Mike Scott pitched a four-hitter and struck out 10 as the Astros won at Pittsburgh.

Scott (13-8) raised his major league-leading strikeout total to 233. He pitched his fourth shutout of the season and lowered his earned-run average to 2.23, best in the majors.

Scott entered the game with a career 0-8 record and a 5.73 ERA against Pittsburgh.

The Astros won for the eighth time in 11 games. Houston increased its lead in the National League West to 6 1/2 games over idle San Francisco and 10 games over the Dodgers.

Cincinnati 6, San Diego 5--Buddy Bell hit a three-run homer, and John Denny and John Franco survived a five-run rally by the Padres in the ninth inning as the Reds won at Cincinnati.

Bell has five home runs in his last five games.

Denny (11-10) had a three-hit shutout entering the ninth, but Tony Gwynn’s two-run homer and Terry Kennedy’s two-out RBI double pulled San Diego within 6-3.
