A billion-dollar budget--San Diego County government’s first--was approved Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors.

The budget is for the fiscal year that began July 1 and represents a 9% increase--about $87 million--over what was spent in the year ended June 30. Spending this year is expected to total about $1.03 billion.

The largest portion of the county budget, about 37%, will go to social service programs. Twenty percent will go to law enforcement, courts, jails, and the services of the county recorder, assessor and clerk.

About 14.5% of the budget will be spent on health services, while community services--agriculture, parks and recreation, planning and the coroner, among others--will account for about 11% of county spending.

The county’s administration takes up about 11.5% of the budget.

About 53% of the county’s revenue comes from the state and federal governments. About 20% comes from property taxes, and the remainder is from fees, special funds and other sources.
