A tip from the police Crime Stoppers Hotline led to the arrest of two San Diego women on suspicion of killing a retired Marine sergeant major on Aug. 6, police said.

Roommates Debra Jones, 22, and Ulondra Singleton, 23, both of Encanto, were questioned Wednesday and later booked into the Los Colinas County Jail in Santee in connection with the shooting death of John Sherman Green, homicide detectives said.

Green was shot by one of two women whom he and a friend reportedly had met in front of Cynd’s Cocktail Lounge on 54th Street, according to Sgt. Ted Armijo. The four went to Green’s home on Latimer Street in a car driven by his friend, whom police refused to identify.

“Once inside, one of the women pulled out a handgun and told the men to empty their pockets,” Armijo said. “They complied but she opened fire anyway.”

One of the shots hit Green in the head, police said.

Green’s friend tried to wrestle the gun away but gave up after the second woman entered the scuffle. He escaped through the back door and alerted a neighbor, who called police.

The women fled in the car owned by Green’s friend. The car was recovered the next day but no suspects had been identified.

Green had been a correctional assistant for the Model Ex-Offenders Inc., a 40-bed work-furlough center for parolees, for three years.

People calling the police Crime Stoppers Hotline may remain anonymous, and information leading to the arrest of suspects could mean as much as $1,000 in reward money, police said.
