Darling and Teufel Are Indicted for Assaulting Officer in Houston
New York Met second baseman Tim Teufel and pitcher Ron Darling were indicted Wednesday for the aggravated assault of a police officer.
The charges stem from an incident at a Houston nightclub July 19 in which Teufel, Darling and teammates Bob Ojeda and Rick Aguilera were involved in a scuffle with off-duty police officers working at the club.
If convicted, Teufel and Darling could face maximum penalties of up to 10 years in prison and $5,000 in fines. The two players will be arraigned Aug. 29 before state District Judge Joe Kegans, said their attorney, Dick DeGuerin.
Teufel and Darling were arrested as they were leaving Cooter’s nightclub. Officer Randal Gresham testified at an examining hearing that Teufel became enraged, verbally abusive and violent when told he could not leave the bar carrying a bottle of beer.
Darling was arrested when he tried to help Teufel in the scuffle.
