World Swimming Championships : Canada Wins Synchronized Team Title

Carolyn Waldo collected her third gold medal at the World Swimming Championships Wednesday when Canada held off a determined challenge by the United States to win the synchronized team title.

Already winner of the solo and duet events, the 21-year-old from Beaconsfield, Quebec, completed her collection of gold medals when the American team failed by 0.4 of a point to overhaul the Canadian total.

With the race swimmers enjoying a rest day, the synchronized event provided the only final.

In diving, Lin Chen of China posted the highest score to lead after the preliminary dives of the women’s platform.

Although the American eight-member team received the top score in the final routine, it remained behind the Canadians on the overall score, 191.200 points to 190.821.

The U.S. team is composed of Kristen Babb, Lori Hatch, Karen Josephson, Sarah Josephson, Karen Madsen, Susan Read, Lisa Riddell and Mary Visniski.

Japan, whose score for the final routine tied the Canadians, picked up the bronze medals. Its lineup was Emiko Goto, Hisako Aoishi, Aki Takayama, Yurika Oogane, Emiko Hirata, Miyako Tanaka, Megumi Itoh, Mikako Kotani.
