Pakistani President Zia ul-Haq returned home from a two-week pilgrimage to Mecca to face the aftermath of Pakistan’s worst political violence since 1983. At least 29 people were killed and dozens injured in clashes with police during a drive by the opposition to oust Zia and force elections. Hundreds of Zia’s political opponents were arrested, including opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.
