Kasparov and Karpov End 11th Game in Draw
World chess champion Gary Kasparov and challenger Anatoly Karpov, in the most complicated game yet in their championship series, Monday ended their 11th game in a draw.
The score in the match is now 6-5 in Kasparov’s favor.
On Monday, Karpov produced a novelty, offering to sacrifice a rook for a knight on the 15th move, which led to an intense struggle, with both kings having open defenses.
Eventually, both queens were exchanged and Kasparov gained a small edge. But he gave up trying to win from his position. On his 41st move, he looked up, and the two players shook hands, agreeing to a draw.
The 12th game is scheduled for Wednesday, with Kasparov playing white.
