Stefano Mei, 23, an Italian policeman, won the men’s 10,000 meters at the European track and field meet in Stuttgart, West Germany, ending teammate Alberto Cova’s five-year reign in the event.
Mei outraced Cova on the final curve and won in 27 minutes 56.79 seconds. Cova finished second and Salvatore Antibo was third for an Italian sweep.
