Rebirth at GM Plant Demolition of the former General Motors assembly plant is under way for an $80-million retail and industrial center that is expected to bring 3,000 new jobs to the city. Construction of the South Gate Business/Industrial Park is expected to start early next year. Industrial light manufacturing and retail distribution facilities and a 15-acre commercial shopping center are planned at the site. Work on the 90-acre site is expected to be completed in seven years. The city is on the move through redevelopment, officials say, after being economically devastated in 1982 when the GM plant, the city’s largest employer, closed. The plant employed 4,300. The 50-year-old plant was sold to the city by GM for $7 million. The city resold it for $12 million to a private developer. This is one of six South Gate redevelopment projects. This year, new construction worth $25 million was initiated in the city, representing an all-time high for building permits.
