Tour bus drivers would need special certificates to work in California under a bill sent to the governor.

The Assembly approved on a 73-4 vote late Thursday a bill by Assemblyman Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica) that was prompted by the May crash in Mono County of a tour bus carrying senior citizens from Santa Monica. Twenty-one people died after the bus plunged into the Walker River.

Current law requires a tour bus driver to have a Class 2 driver’s license. The new bill would require tour bus drivers, starting in July, 1987, to also have special certificates issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. A certificate would require a special test and a fee of $41.
