Humphrey, Toon and Leahy Star for Jets in 37-30 Exhibition Victory Over Eagles
Bobby Humphrey’s 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, Al Toon’s 71-yard scoring reception and Pat Leahy’s three field goals helped lead the New York Jets to a 37-30 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday night in the final National Football League exhibition game for both teams.
In the first half, Ken O’Brien, the Jets’ starting quarterback, completed 6 of 13 passes for 121 yards and the touchdown to Toon, and Humphrey made his long return. Pat Ryan came in for the second half and hit 12 of 17 passes for 214 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns, both to Johnny Hector--for 14 and 21 yards.
In the Eagles’ three-way competition for the starting quarterback job, Ron Jaworski, in little less than two quarters, connected on 8 of 15 passes for 96 yards. His chief rival, Matt Cavanaugh, completed only 3 of 7 passes for 19 yards and gave way to Randall Cunningham.
Cunningham completed 9 of 15 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns as the Eagles finished their first exhibition schedule under Coach Buddy Ryan with a 2-2 record. The Jets were also 2-2.
