Race driver Gordon Johncock was forced to skip the 1986 Indianapolis 500 and the entire Indy car season because a sponsor reneged on promises to supply him with cars and crew, according to a lawsuit seeking at least $1 million.

Johncock contends that Paul Stafford Sr. of Battle Creek, Mich,. breached a contract promising to pay Johncock $5 million in expenses to compete this year. The lawsuit seeks compensation for expenses, loss of anticipated earnings and income from endorsements and advertising, among other damages.
