One of Cuba’s most prominent dissidents has taken refuge in the French Embassy in Havana, and Western diplomats say French President Francois Mitterrand is quietly trying to persuade Cuban leader Fidel Castro to allow him to leave the country. Ricardo Bofill, a 52-year-old former philosophy professor who since 1978 has spent almost a decade in Cuban jails, entered the embassy on Wednesday and declared that he was not going to leave. Authorities have refused him permission to emigrate and join his wife in Miami.
