Countywide : Free Vaccination Clinics for Schoolchildren Set
County public health officials have scheduled free immunization clinics to vaccinate schoolchildren against diphtheria, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella and polio; the immunizations are required for admission to California schools.
New statewide immunization laws require schools to enforce a strict “no shots, no school” policy, said Dr. Gerald Wagner, immunization program director for the county Health Care Agency.
In addition, a new vaccine, Hib (Haemophilus Influenza Type B), is recommended for preschoolers and will be available at the clinics.
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Public Health Service have recommended that all children between the ages of 2 and 5 be immunized with the Hib vaccine, and children enrolled in preschool should receive it at the age of 18 months, according to county health officials.
Parents of children entering school for the first time who cannot show written proof of immunizations should contact their physicians or the Health Care Agency for a schedule of the free clinics.
