Carter Hawley has received offers for Wanamaker.
The Los Angeles-based retailer said it has received “a number of offers in excess of book value” for its John Wanamaker division in Philadelphia, which has a book value of more than $175 million. A Carter Hawley spokesman said the company’s investment banker, Morgan Stanley & Co., is evaluating the offers. He added that the company is not in discussions with or considering any bids from Hess’s Department Stores in Allentown, Pa. Philadelphia newspapers had earlier reported that Hess’s made a bid of between $80 million and $100 million for Wanamaker.
