General Motors reported that it plans to move its West Coast design center from a Newbury Park complex to the hills of Malibu to give engineers more space and a “more creative environment.”
Pending approval of county and state planning authorities, GM plans to build an 85,700-square-foot design facility on 22 acres just south of Pepperdine University. Construction could be completed by late 1987, GM spokesman Harry Kelly said.
The 3-year-old Advanced Concepts Center, on Anchor Court in Newbury Park, employs 35. No staffing changes are expected. The facility designs cars intended for production in the 21st Century.
GM also designs autos in Warren, Mich.
