Join the Club

Your informative article on the Commonwealth nations (Times, Aug. 9) suggested to me that perhaps now is the time for the United States to join the club. As a former colony, we are eligible. Since 31 members are republics, membership should be consistent with our republican tradition.

We would benefit through increased influence in the Third World and closer ties with Canada, our largest trading partner, as well as with Britain and Australia. As a result, we might reduce our unfavorable balance of trade and win more votes in the United Nations as well as promote peace.
