A small plane clipped power lines and crashed Monday in New England on busy Interstate 95, where it slid several hundred feet, killing one person and injuring three others on board but missing traffic, authorities and witnesses said.

Elsewhere on Monday, a pilot walked away uninjured after a crash landing on a mountaintop hay field in West Virginia, and at least one man died in a Michigan crash.

Interstate 95, the major road linking Boston with Maine and New Hampshire, was heavy with holiday traffic when the single-engine Piper crashed at midday near North Hampton, N.H. The road was closed for hours in both directions, police said. No one was injured.

The plane knocked down power lines, landed on its side and skidded several hundred feet under a bridge before coming to a stop. It broke into three pieces and one wing burned, witnesses said.

Near Sissonville, W.Va., a single-engine plane was a total loss after the pilot landed in a mountaintop field after the engine died during approach to Charleston’s Yeager Airport, officials said.

Another small plane crashed in a wooded area of Michigan’s Oakland County, about 45 miles northwest of Detroit, killing at least one person.
